Tai Chi classes meet at 2:30 p.m. every Monday at The Timbers of Shorewood retirement community, 1100 N. River Rd., Shorewood. Classes are taught by Joliet resident Roger Thompson and last about one hour. Seniors are encouraged to attend, even those with limited mobility.
“Through practice, Tai Chi allows the body to stay healthy and even repair itself,” Thompson said. “It is particularly helpful for seniors because it helps extend one’s range of motion, both physically and mentally.”
Thompson has been practicing Tai Chi for more than 19 years and teaching it for more than nine years. He hopes that by practicing Tai Chi, seniors will learn to dissipate stress and be more relaxed in their everyday lives.
“There is a personal euphoria and clarity that comes with Tai Chi,” said Thompson. “Dealing with the complexities of daily challenges becomes so much easier.”
The Timbers of Shorewood is a rental retirement community which provides senior independent living and assisted living apartments and a full schedule of activities and senior services. Furnished apartments are also available for a short-term stay - a weekend, a week, a month or longer.
Tai Chi classes are free and open to all senior citizens. For more information call Shelly Goggins at (815) 609-0669.
