Veterans at the Timbers honored by Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Honor Guard on Veterans Day
Veterans Day is important to the residents and staff at the Timbers of Shorewood, and a meaningful Veterans Day event took place on Friday, November 11, at the senior living community at 1100 N. River Road, Shorewood.
The Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Honor Guard bugler played taps and representatives performed a flag folding ceremony. It is the only active national cemetery in the Chicago area. It opened in 1999 on the grounds of the former Joliet Arsenal.
Seventeen Timbers residents are veterans. Each received gifts from American Legion Women’s Auxiliary of Lockport and a goodie bag with multiple items including a hand-made poppy crochet from the Timbers staff.
“Veterans are such an integral part of our senior living community,” said Kevin Young, executive director of The Timbers of Shorewood. “We wanted to do something special to honor them.”
