In honor of Heart Awareness Month, a representative from Newsome Home Health will present a seminar titled “Heart Health” at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, at The Timbers of Shorewood, 1100 N. River Rd., Shorewood.
The human heart is a large muscle with two sides that pumps blood to the lungs, where it gets oxygen, then pumps the oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. As people age, may have to begin working harder. In addition to age, certain factors may also cause the heart to have to work harder.
These factors include:
• certain medications
• emotional stress
• illness
• infection
• injury
• extreme physical exertion
• common conditions such as high blood pressure, angina and arteriosclerosis
Positive changes, however small they may be, can help maintain heart health as one ages. While it is important to discuss the necessity of medicines or a specialized plan with a doctor, there are many ways people can begin improving heart health through everyday habits.
Any type of exercise, even walking shopping or dancing, and a proper diet are important for a healthy heart. Reducing stress is also a great way to keep the heart strong. Studies show that older people who have pets are less stressed. In addition, talking about problems with a loved one or caregiver provides a necessary outlet for stress, even if it does not provide an immediate resolution.
The Timbers of Shorewood is a rental retirement community which provides independent and assisted living apartments and a full schedule of activities and services. Furnished apartments are also available for a short-term stay – a weekend, a week, a month or longer.
The event is open to the public and admission is free. For more information, call Shelly Goggins at 815-609-0669.
