The father/son guitar team, Vern “N” Vern, will perform at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, November 19, in the Piano Lounge at the Timbers of Shorewood retirement community, 1100 N. River Road. The public is invited to this free event.
Vern “N” Vern is an acoustic guitar playing family trio from the Kankakee area. The “N” stands for Neil who is the grandson.
The elder Vern(Grandpa) is in his 70s and sings and plays guitar. He loves country music and grew up listening to Hank Williams, Bill Monroe and Lulu Belle and Scotty’s “Barn Dance” on WLS radio. Until he retired ten years ago, he played and sang for his own enjoyment or for family and friends. Once retired, however, Vern played in public at open mic sessions.
Vern’s older son, the second Vern, is a veteran musical performer. He began taking guitar lessons when he was in 3rd grade and soon after, he performed “Dueling Banjos” and “The House Of The Rising Sun” in front of an audience. Vern was in band throughout his school years and into college. After college, he played drums in a few rock bands and later started his own band, writing many of the group’s songs.
The second Vern began teaching his son Neil to play guitar when Neil was seven years old. Once he knew enough chords to play along, he joined in with the two Verns. Neil is an audience favorite.
Vern “N” Vern took their show on the road in 2013. They perform at restaurants, wine tastings, fundraisers, festivals and farmer’s markets. They have hosted their own open mic nights and continue to play at several private functions a month.
